The past two days have been amazing!! I have visited various skyscrapers and parks across Manhattan. I was able to visit The Flatiron Building and the Chrysler Building, both of which we discuss in my classroom! I was also able to go to the observatory deck of the Empire State Building and the "Top of the Rock" at Rockefeller Center. It was amazing to read about the history behind these buildings and to see how they were constructed. It was very cool to learn about the impact that these buildings had on the city.
I also visited some area parks to see, firsthand, how important they are to the city's residents. I visited Washington Square Park, Union Square, the Highline, and Central Park. Central Park was incredible!! I knew it was big, but it was so much bigger in person! There were so many things for residents to do in Central Park. There were baseball fields, fountains, a "kids' zone" with a carousel, baseball fields, a man-made lake, etc. The Highline was really cool, too. It was formerly an elevated railroad that has been renovated to a walking park. All of the parks were crowded with people. Kids played in the fountains, and there were a lot of street performers out.
Along my route, I also stopped by Grand Central Station, Carnegie Hall, Rockefeller Center, the New York Public Library, the Astor Row Houses, and the Apollo Theater. I can not believe how much history is in this city and how much there is to see. I am exhausted, but I am pressing on and taking it all in so that I can bring it back to my "kids". Oh, and the food in NYC is amazing, also!!! Off to bed.. talk to ya'll in a couple of days! :)
