About My Trip
My name is Rachel Goan, and I am a Social Studies teacher at Hamilton County High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was recently fortunate enough to receive a grant from Fund for Teachers in conjunction with the Public Education Foundation (thank you, thank you, thank you, FFT & PEF!!!) that will allow me to explore New York City for ten days this summer. While in the "Big Apple", I will be studying the economic, cultural, historic, and political facets of the city in an effort to enhance my own understanding of these themes and to gather resources that I can use in my own classroom. In addition to expanding my own knowledge of these topics, I will also be visiting social organizations in the area to learn strategies aimed at tackling social issues, such as truancy, teen pregnancy, violence, etc., that so often impede both urban and rural students' academic successes. While I have many goals I aim to achieve on this trip, my ultimate goals are to become a better teacher and to bring back everything I learn to share with both my current and future students.
I will be using this blog to document my trip. I will be uploading pictures and information about my trip for my students, my colleagues, and the public to view. I will also be sharing strategies that I learn at the social organizations on this blog. Thank you for following me!
