Wow!!! I am having SO MUCH FUN and learning so much here in the "Big Apple"!!
I began my day by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. It offered up some amazing views of the city! I then visited City Hall and something I have been looking forward to for a while-The old Tweed Courthouse! My students and I discuss the Tweed Courthouse during the Gilded Age unit in my history class, so it was really neat to see the courthouse in person. The Tweed courthouse was built by the corrupt Tweed Ring, a political machine that used to control NYC during the Gilded Age. It cost millions of dollars (back then!) to build, and I can see why by looking at the building!
I then traveled to the Bronx to visit the Next Generation Center. The Next Generation Center is sponsored by the Children's Aid Society. It serves as a "safe place" for young people to gather. The center provides academic support, personal finance training, internships, therapy, medical care, etc., to at risk youth in the NYC area. I met with Briana, the center director. She was so nice and helpful. She provided me with a lot of ideas to bring back to Hamilton County.
Next, I met up with another Fund For Teachers fellow, Rachel Heslowitz. Rachel lives in the area and teaches in Harlem. We had a nice snack and shared ideas for over an hour!
I ended the day by visiting Times Square once again. I wanted to see it at night! I am still having a blast and am excited to continue my studies!!
